Cloud Peak Energy Inc., through its subsidiaries, engages in coal mining operations in the Powder River Basin of the United States. It produces sub-bituminous steam coal with low sulfur content for electric utilities and industrial customers. The
company operates two surface coal mines in Wyoming and one surface coal mine in Montana. It also owns a 50% interest in a surface coal mine in Montana. As of December 31, 2009, it had approximately 1.0 billion tons of proven and probable coal reserves. In addition, the company holds a 50% joint venture interest in the Decker Coal Company. Cloud Peak Energy, Inc. was founded in 1993 and is based in Gillette, Wyoming.
